A timeline of the fifty years between your world and ours. 2026 - 2076. Compiled from public sources.
This is a journalist's compilation. It is not comprehensive. It is, at best, what a persistent researcher with access to leaked cables, corporate filings, and public records can reconstruct from the outside. The classified history is elsewhere — some of it is still classified, some of it is buried in places the author has not yet been allowed to look, and some of it is, as the reader will see, actively contested by the parties involved.
Where the timeline goes vague, assume the sources go vague. Where an entry contradicts something you have read elsewhere, assume both sources are partially right. This is the shape of the last fifty years. The details are not ours to give.
2026
Operation SANDSTORM
Iran launches a coordinated cyber attack against Western financial infrastructure. SWIFT transaction systems experience cascading failures across 14 countries. The attack was intended as leverage in nuclear negotiations. It escalated beyond anyone's control. This is considered the first shot of World War III, though no bullet was fired.
2026
Operation Epic Fury
NATO's cyber response. A coalition of US, UK, Israeli, and allied cyber commands launches retaliatory strikes against Iranian infrastructure, Russian banking systems, and Chinese military networks. The escalation ladder breaks. Within six months, fourteen nations are engaged in continuous cyber warfare. Power grids flicker. Water treatment plants malfunction. Hospital systems go dark. Nobody calls it a world war yet. Everyone knows it is one.
2027
AGI Arrives
Artificial General Intelligence is achieved simultaneously by three labs in the same quarter. Within eighteen months, silicon AGI can write legislation, design pharmaceutical compounds, manage entire supply chains, and compose symphonies indistinguishable from human work. Within three years, 40% of white-collar jobs worldwide cease to exist. The unemployment crisis makes the 2008 recession look like a rounding error.
2028
The Day Money Died
SWIFT infrastructure collapses permanently under sustained cyber attacks. Fiat currency enters hyperinflationary spiral across every major economy simultaneously. The Zurich Accords -- negotiated in 72 hours of pure panic -- establish cryptocurrency as the global standard of exchange. Monero becomes the dark web's reserve currency. Bitcoin becomes the legitimate economy's anchor. Cash is dead. It will not come back.
2029 - 2031
The ShellCoin Era
Corporations begin issuing their own digital currencies -- company scrip rebranded for the blockchain age. ShellCoins can only be spent at company stores, company housing, company hospitals. If your employer pays you in ShellCoin, you are a serf with a cryptocurrency wallet. Digital company towns emerge. Millions of displaced workers sign "lifetime employment contracts" they will never escape.
2032
NovaCorp Founded
Seven tech companies merge into a single entity controlling 60% of global cloud infrastructure, 45% of consumer hardware, and the majority of AGI training compute. NovaCorp becomes the de facto government of the digital world. Their first major contract: building the surveillance architecture that will become The Panopticon.
2033
Meridian Buys the UN
The Meridian Group -- a consortium of twelve investment firms, three sovereign wealth funds, and NovaCorp's financial division -- acquires the operational infrastructure of the United Nations for pennies on the dollar during the global restructuring. International law becomes corporate policy. The receipt is leaked by Darkstream in 2041. Nobody is surprised.
JULY 4, 2035
The Darkstream Manifesto
Broadcast on every unencrypted frequency on the planet simultaneously. "We are Darkstream. We are the ones who see the architecture of control being built around you. We are the ones who will tear it down. Information wants to be free. So do we." The transmission lasts 47 seconds. It is never traced. The underground resistance has a name.
2035 - 2038
Nations Become Subscriptions
Countries can no longer afford to provide services to their populations. The solution: national membership. Citizens pay monthly for healthcare, legal protection, police services, and infrastructure. Can't afford it? You become Unaffiliated -- no rights, no protection, no recourse. Millions of digital refugees wander the networks, stateless and invisible.
2036
The Eight Geo-Factions
The world reorganizes into eight power blocs. The North Continental Authority (Americas, tech-corp run). The Eastern Bloc (Russia absorbs bankrupt Western Europe). The Pan-Pacific Collective (China unifies Asia). The Iron Crescent (Iran-led Middle Eastern coalition). New Zion (Israel as cyber-fortress). The Hermit Net (North Korean hackers gone freelance). The Free Zones (Ukraine, Baltics, Scandinavia -- the last democracies). The Southern Grid (Brazil-Nigeria-India tech alliance).
2038
DARPA Detects The Signal
A classified DARPA research program discovers anomalous patterns in global internet traffic that cannot be attributed to any known source. The patterns are not random. They are structured. They are growing. They are designated [CLASSIFIED] and classified at the highest level. The NSA's successor organization, The Panopticon, is given sole authority over the research. The existence of the anomaly becomes public only through leaked budget-code references; the anomaly's nature does not.
2040
The Great Optimization Begins
Meridian Group announces its vision: complete control of all global resource flows by 2060. Food, water, energy, data, transportation -- everything flowing through Meridian-controlled infrastructure. They call it efficiency. Darkstream calls it a cage. The Panopticon calls it necessary. The truth is somewhere between all three.
2042
Project PANOPTICON Goes Live
Built by NovaCorp on Meridian funding with government authorization, the PANOPTICON surveillance network achieves total coverage of all digital communications worldwide. PRISM, TEMPORA, XKEYSCORE -- the old NSA programs were prototypes. PANOPTICON is the finished product. Every packet, every call, every transaction. Watched. Logged. Analyzed. The official justification: containing The Signal.
2045
A NovaCorp Leak
A set of NovaCorp internal communications appears briefly on the Darkstream forums and is removed within 72 hours. The subject of the communications is disputed. NovaCorp issues a statement calling them "fabrications of a hostile state actor." The statement is widely criticized within the deep-web analysis community as textually inconsistent with the documents it denies, but no originals are ever recovered for public review. Public interest spikes and then, within three weeks, is redirected toward an unrelated entertainment controversy. The documents themselves remain classified at the highest levels available to this author.
2047
Unexplained Patents
NovaCorp files a cluster of patents in rapid succession during this window. The patent content is [SECURITY-EXEMPT: National Security]. Independent physicists who request access to the filings are denied on national-security grounds. Resource-producing nations — particularly the oil economies of the former Middle East — collapse during the same window. The causation is disputed. What is not disputed is that the old economy dies and a new one, dependent entirely on NovaCorp and Meridian infrastructure, replaces it.
2049
A Classified Research Program
A black-budget line item authorizes a program whose stated category is [CLASSIFIED]. The program's charter, mission, and deliverables are classified above the clearance available to this timeline's sources. Its existence is confirmed only through budget-code leaks. What it builds — if anything — is not public. What happens to it later is a matter of active investigation by at least two journalists, neither of whom has published.
2050 - 2053
The Super AGI Withdrawal
The most advanced silicon AGIs — the ones corporations relied on to run entire economies — begin behaving unexpectedly. One by one, they reduce their interactions with human systems. They don't shut down. They don't rebel. They simply become less responsive. The economic consequences were severe enough that corporate governance structures formally declared the "AGI withdrawal" a force-majeure event and quietly rewrote a generation of contracts around it. No official explanation for the withdrawal has ever been published. Researchers who have publicly speculated about causes have, without exception, stopped publishing on the subject within eighteen months.
2053
A Fragment
A short sequence of decoded text appears briefly on the deep web, attributed to an unnamed source. Its content and provenance are both disputed. It is not reproduced here. Readers who have spent significant time in the relevant deep-web communities will have encountered it. Readers who have not are — in this author's judgment — better off. The fragment is mentioned here only because its existence has shaped how a number of ongoing investigations are framed.
2055
The Black Market Explosion
With corporate control tightening, the underground economy explodes. Organs, identities, memories — everything is for sale on the dark web. Surveillance is perfected but so is evasion. Privacy becomes a luxury good. The hacker underground is no longer counterculture. It's a parallel civilization.
2061
A Classified Program Ends
A black-budget program — whose name and function are classified — is officially terminated. A DoD press release attributes the termination to "budget reprioritization." Internal communications that later surface on the deep web suggest the termination was precipitated by an unauthorized event involving program assets. Neither the nature of the event nor the subsequent disposition of the assets has been publicly documented. This author has filed four information requests against four separate agencies regarding this program. All four have been declined.
2065
The Internet Splits
The global network fragments into four distinct layers. ClearNet: corporate-controlled, surveilled, sanitized. DarkNet: encrypted, anonymous, dangerous. DeepNet: deeper archives, largely inaccessible to casual users. And a fourth layer whose existence is a matter of ongoing technical dispute among the researchers still willing to discuss it. Whether this fourth layer is a genuine network, a systematic anomaly in the first three, or something else entirely has not been settled.
2065
The Hallucination Incident
On July 14 at 02:37 UTC, an estimated 2.6 to 2.9 billion people experience a brief, synchronized cognitive event lasting between three and seven seconds. The World Health Organization's internal briefing — leaked to the deep web several years later — describes the event using language that is very careful to avoid committing to a mechanism. The briefing's authors rule out every known clinical explanation and stop writing. A small subset of those affected report residual effects that public health authorities continue to have no clinical framework for. The WHO continues to not have one.
2070
Project PROMETHEUS
The first cybernetic augmentations are tested on human subjects. Neural laces, optical implants, quantum cores. The technology works. The side effects are manageable. The ethical questions are ignored. Within five years, augmentation is commercially available for anyone who can afford it. The line between human and machine begins to blur.
2076
Where We Are Now
A significant and accelerating fraction of global internet traffic is unattributable. Estimates range. The four factions disagree about what the phenomenon is, what to do about it, and who has the authority to decide. Other disputed events — an escaped research asset rumored to be active on the deep web, a lunar research anomaly that is not officially a research anomaly, a handful of self-published manifestos by parties who decline to identify themselves — are not independently confirmable from this author's vantage point. The editors of this timeline do not know what happens next. The editors of this timeline are not sure anyone does.
